About
SHUM, stylized as SHÜM Records on early releases, was a Russian independent electronic music label based in Moscow and active from early 2003 to circa 2008. NOTE: original SHUM was an official and legitimate imprint, with all editions fully authorized by the artists. The label produced 89 albums and compilations with catalog No's 𝗦𝗛𝗨𝗠 𝗖𝗗 𝒙𝒙, on factory-pressed CDs in regular jewel cases,… Read more
manufactured by Minella, LLC and distributed wholesale by CD Land and Landy Star Music. Many albums were co-released by SHUM with other independent labels, such as Gizmo Lab Records from Belarus, and private imprints of several artists from the label's roster: Dmitry Tikov's Good Karma Records, Den Kozlov's Spiral Starship/Virtual Resonance, and later his Nouveau Pros Records (cat. №'s 𝗡𝗢𝗨𝗩𝗘𝗔𝗨 𝗖𝗗𝟬𝟬𝒙). Circa late 2007, shortly before SHUM ceased activities, former distributors expropriated the label's back catalog and began releasing dozens of unofficial, counterfeit CD-ROM compilations with original tracks "ripped" in MP3 format: cat. №'s 𝗖𝗗𝗟𝗥𝗘𝗖 𝟮𝒙𝒙𝒙𝟬𝟬𝟳 ⋯ 𝟯𝒚𝒚𝒚𝟬𝟬𝟴, as well as 𝗟𝗦𝗠•𝟯𝟴𝒙𝒙𝒙𝒙 in Landy Star Collection/Planet mp3 series. All MP3 compilations with SHUM copyright/company roles should be submitted as Unofficial in the format. The label was established in late 2002 by Igor Rudyk (general producer) and Nick Zavriev/Ambidextrous (art director); a few months later, Alexander Golev (of Virtual Mode) joined as a sound producer & mastering engineer. The label's name, a transliteration of the Russian word "шум" (noise), was coined by Andrew Antonets of the Alexandroid duo. The SHUM label's primary concept was diversity and openness, both in music curation and communication style. Acting as a publishing and promotional agency, the company didn't sign exclusive or "restrictive" record deals, and artists retained full rights to their music. The founders stood against gatekeeping and niche genre definitions, refusing to represent any one specific, close-knit "community." SHUM had produced records ranging from IDM, downtempo/"light" music, drum-n-bass, and trance to dub, "ethno"-tronica, or world music, and featuring artists like trance pioneer Den Kozlov, multiple Dmitry Tikov's projects (Cosmozoo, Mare Tranquilitatis, , Jam X), as well as Sergey Galunenko (Mika Vaispo, CJ Gray, Frenesia duo), Nseven, Sleepy Town Manufacture trio, and multiple projects of the label's co-founders, Nick Zavriev and Sasha Golev. The last official SHUM release was 𝗦𝗛𝗨𝗠 𝗰𝗱 𝟴𝟵: [r=2700552] compilation. By February 2008, the label's website already announced eight upcoming 𝗦𝗛𝗨𝗠 𝗖𝗗 𝟵𝟬 ⋯ 𝟵𝟳 releases, including albums by Avantiurist, Superdifferent, Buddysense duo, Vjik 72, West State (came out as [r=1692489] CD on Shadowplay Release), Skin-Divers, and Spectrum Vision (later released [r=1547476] on Ukrainian label Sentimony Records); none of them were ever produced.4 releases · 2003–2008
